First, listen to the pattern
“Clicking” covers several different sounds. A healthy hard disk is not silent: its motor spins, its heads move and it may make a light chatter while reading or writing. Seagate’s current guidance makes the same distinction between ordinary working noise and a sound that has recently changed.
The worrying version is usually easy to describe after you have heard it once. It is harder, more regular and often repeats while the computer waits. The drive may vanish, take a long time to appear, freeze Finder or File Explorer, or produce an error when you open a folder.
Do not spend ten minutes recording the perfect sample. If the sound is new and the only copy of your data is on that drive, the condition of the files matters more than identifying the noise at home.

Do not keep trying “one last restart”
A drive that briefly appears can tempt you into repeated attempts. Each attempt asks the heads to initialise and read again. If the mechanism is unstable, a successful spin-up does not prove that another attempt is harmless.
If the drive becomes readable and sounds normal, copying the irreplaceable files to a different device is more important than running a full health test. Do not begin with a large folder of replaceable downloads while the only family photographs sit at the end of the queue.
Do not run repair tools first
File-system repair, surface scans, benchmarks and recovery software all create read activity. They can be appropriate when the storage hardware is known to be stable and the loss is logical. A repeated hard click is a hardware warning, not evidence that a directory merely needs repairing.

Do not open the drive
The silver lid is not an inspection panel. Removing it outside a controlled environment exposes the platters to airborne contamination. It also changes the evidence a technician receives. Photographs of an open drive on a kitchen table may look technical; they do not make the drive safer to read.
Freezing, tapping or twisting the enclosure are no better. None of these actions identifies the failed component, and all of them add an uncontrolled variable.
Why a hard drive clicks
Inside a hard disk, read/write heads move across spinning platters without resting on the recording surface during normal operation. The drive’s firmware positions those heads using information stored on the media and in the drive’s own service area.
A repeated click can occur when the drive cannot complete that sequence. Possible causes include damaged heads, unreadable positioning information, contamination, an electronics fault or a problem supplying stable power. The sound alone does not tell you which one is responsible.
That uncertainty matters. A cable check may help a normally sounding external drive that is short of power. It is not a licence to repeatedly energise a drive that is grinding or striking loudly. - Can the device be made stable enough to read?
- What is the safest order in which to image the important areas?
The objective is not to make the original drive trustworthy again. It is to obtain the best possible read of the data onto stable storage, with the fewest unnecessary passes over damaged media.
Mechanical work may require a matched donor component and a controlled environment. Other cases turn out to be electronic, firmware-related or external to the disk itself. That is why a price or recovery outcome cannot be diagnosed from the sound alone.
If the files are replaceable and you already hold a tested backup, replacing the drive is usually the sensible decision. If they are not replaceable, keep the number of further power cycles at zero and arrange a free hard drive diagnosis before experimenting.
One habit that prevents the panic
A backup is useful only if it is separate from the failing drive and you can open files from it. Once a month, choose one photograph, one document and one recent project at random and restore or open them from the backup copy.
That small test answers the question a green tick cannot: if this disk began clicking tonight, would the other copy actually work?
